Poop Goes Here |
You have to put the soiled diapers somewhere.
Cloth, disposable: It doesn't matter; You have to store your stinkies until the next time they can be picked up.
I recommend this because you don't need anything special for it to function. You are not forced to continue giving money to one company just to store your dirty diapers.
We received our BabyTrend Diaper Champ as a gift at the baby shower for our first kid. I had placed it on our registry after looking at the other options available to us.
Many other diaper pails have proprietary bags. Yeah, they have a special bag that you must use with their pail. All other bags are inferior to their disk shaped diaper dump. Some even release fresh scents, so your kid's poopies smell like lilacs. Or at least that's what the people from marketing say.
There was even a pail that was battery operated. Why do you need batteries for something whose job is to eat poop?
Pros:
- No Proprietary anything. Use your Own Bags
- Practically Air Tight. No smell to speak of.
- Easy to clean.
- Holds a half week's worth of diapers.
- Durable
Cons:
- No window to see how full the bin is.
Review:
At the store, the box indicated that you can use your own bags. That alone was a plus. Then, you see that it has it's own handle, no pressure activated sensor that runs on batteries to put the diaper in the pail. Another plus. Finally, the thing is pretty much self contained. It's possible that you could grow a whole ecosystem of mold and bacteria in there - and never smell it.Upon using it at home, we found that it was very simple to use: Lift the handle - Diaper goes in. Pull down the handle - Diaper goes down the chute and into the bag. That's it. It's a self sealing system, so the smell doesn't come out.
The top of the lid has two latches. You can lift the top white part to access just the bag and diaper area. Sometimes too many diapers can get in there, and a "clog" develops. Lifting just the top is an easy way to see what's happening and remedy this.
Lifting the lower latch, which is pink or blue depending on which one you have, will lift up the bag and the diaper chute. This is helpful if you want to change a odor eater and don't want to expose your own nose to your kid's diaper's odor. Or if you are storing something in the diaper pail, and need to access it.
Why you would store something in there is beyond me, but the possibility exists.
Cleaning this is very simple. Just put it in the shower and dump some water in it. Scrub if necessary with soapy water, and dump out the water. Nothing to it.
We've had this pail for about 4 years now. Believe me, it's seen some shit. It's been climbed on, knocked over, and abused. Yet, it still works like a champ. Maybe that's why they call it the Diaper Champ.
We use regular garbage bags in ours, and cloth diapers. We dump the dirty diapers into a larger bag when the bin gets filled, which for use is about once a week. Keep in mind though that this is our upstairs bin, we have another one downstairs, which is our "main" bin for the diaper delivery service. So I'd say that this holds about a half week's worth of diapers under normal use.
I've heard of other families using this and not using a bag at all. That's certainly a possibility, especially if you are using disposable diapers. If you are using cloth, then that just means you are OK with cleaning it more often. Gaijin Daddy is lazy, so we use a bag.
There are 3 things that can be done to improve this pail:
A window to see inside, which indicates how much crap is in there.
A foot operated lever, because I'm lazy. Hell, I'd prefer my toilet, sink, and just about anything else to be foot operated, so this isn't a ding against BabyTrend.
A larger size as an option would be nice. As I said, if this was your only bin, it only holds about half a week's worth of diapers. Less if you change more often.
Conclusion:
You won't regret buying this bin. It's built to last, easy to use, and doesn't need replacement cartridges for anything. It's lack of proprietary products makes it a winner in my book. Use this Amazon Link to support me and my family when you buy this, or any other item from Amazon.
