White Day - The Valentine's Day for Guys

White Food on White Day
White Day is Japan's version of Valentine's Day.  It occurs a month later on March 14th, and The Guys are obligated to get things for The Girls.

For Japanese Valentine's Day, things are reversed from the American tradition, where the Guys have to get Girls things on Valentine's day.

Japanese Guys don't get it that easy though.  They have to return the favor a month later.

Yes, this is indeed another holiday created by the candy companies, and explicitly so in Japan.  Everybody plays along though.

See, all those girls that gave candies to guys on Valentine's Day are expecting a gift in return.  This can be quite expensive if you were an exceptionally popular guy on Valentines day.  If you even forget to give one of them a gift in return, this can lead to some serious embarrassment and of course hurt feelings.

Quite a problem indeed.

Another purpose to this day is to signal to a girl if a relationship is going to continue.  Many girls declare their feelings for a guy on Valentine's Day.  If a relationship does form, this is the day to let her know if it is going to continue for more than a month.  Or Not.  A good way to signal to her that things are going to continue is to buy some white for her.  A popular item is special White Chocolates (not the cheap one's you are giving to everyone else), or some other gift that is either white, or wrapped in white paper, bags, etc.

If you don't want the relationship to continue, then you can get the generic chocolates.  Give her that on this day, and the relationship will end.

For me and my wife, we do an americanized version of the holiday.  We do the American version of Valentine's day, where I do something special for her, and then on White Day, she does something special for me.

In the past, this has usually been a special meal that she has cooked, featuring white ingredients.  This year, we had a white themed dinner as well.

We had Chicken Alfredo with red and white quinoa on a steamed kale salad, with an Afghan style bread topped with Greek yogurt.

It was delicious.

I'm hoping that White Day will begin to catch on over here in the US, in the way that I currently celebrate it.  Why should the girls get their own holiday, what about us guys?  We'd like to be treated for a day by our special ladies, too!

I mean, if other websites can create their own holidays or religions, why can't this one at least import White Day?

Let's make it happen!
